Other Info

Under Massachusetts' Blue Laws, Thanksgiving Day is regarded as a "restricted" holiday. This means that most retail businesses may not operate on Thanksgiving Day, aside from a few exceptions. If you absolutely cannot wait until Black Friday, Nov. 25, to kick off your shopping season, you can make your way to Connecticut or New Hampshire where Thanksgiving Day retail is allowed.

While many big box retailers value Black Friday as their biggest sales day of the year, REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) will be closed on Black Friday, as well as on Thanksgiving. The chain has stores in Reading, Boston, Framingham and Hingham.

Black Friday has traditionally been one of the 5.5 million member consumer cooperative’s 10 busiest days and the chain will no doubt take a fourth-quarter sales hit, but “we think that Black Friday has gotten out of hand,” CEO Jerry Stritzke told CNN Money last month.

Other national chains that will continue the holiday shopping binge with early doorbuster specials on Black Friday are: Target, Best Buy, Toys R Us, Kohl’s, Sears, Macy’s and Dick’s Sporting Goods. Most retailers have yet to confirm their hours for the weekend, so check each company's website or visit a site like BlackFriday.com for hours and deals.
