Burlington Secures $1M In Federal Funding For Safer Travel In Commercial District

The funding will support transportation upgrades along the Mall Road and Middlesex Turnpike corridors.

BURLINGTON, MA — The Town of Burlington will receive $1 million in federal funding to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists in its busy commercial district, officials announced.

The funding, secured by U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton, will support transportation upgrades along the Mall Road and Middlesex Turnpike corridors—two of the town’s most heavily traveled areas.

The investment is part of the federal government’s Fiscal Year 2026 appropriations package, which includes $13.2 million for 14 community improvement projects across Massachusetts’ Sixth District.

Local officials say the funding will help make it easier and safer for residents, workers, and visitors to navigate the area without a car, particularly as Burlington continues shifting toward a more mixed-use development model.

“Burlington is home to nearly 50,000 jobs, but getting around without a car remains far too difficult,” Moulton said in a statement. “This community deserves infrastructure that reflects the needs of its people.”

Town Administrator John Danizo called the funding “an important investment” in Burlington’s future, noting that improving walkability and connectivity is key to enhancing overall livability.

Burlington’s commercial district serves as a major economic hub for the region and has been the focus of ongoing planning efforts aimed at encouraging reinvestment, expanding transportation options, and creating a more connected environment, according to Moulton's statement.
