Gov. Baker In Burlington To Cut Ribbon At MilliporeSigma

Fourth graders from the Memorial School in Burlington got to meet the governor and work on science projects with MilliporeSigma employees.

BURLINGTON, MA -- Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker was in Burlington Wednesday to participate in ribbon-cutting ceremonies at MilliporeSigma's new Life Science Center. As part of the official opening of the center, MilliporeSigma hosted a daylong scientific symposium focused on innovation in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. and invited Burlington public School students to participate in the event.

"Massachusetts continues to be a global leader in research and development, the life sciences and innovative medical advancements that spur economic growth, create jobs and improve the lives of patients around the world," said Governor Charlie Baker. "Our administration continues to prioritize the investments and partnerships that build on those strengths, and is pleased to work with MilliporeSigma as they reinforce their long-time commitment to the Commonwealth and the life sciences."

About 1,000 employees will work at the 280,000-square-foot facility, which MilliporeSigma and its parent company, Merck KGaA of Darmstadt, Germany, plan to use as global destination for customers. The campus houses a customer service center and a laboratory where company employees can work with customers on biomanufacturing techniques. The center was built in accordance with environmentally-friendly LEED standards.

"Our new Burlington campus is specifically designed to foster a hands-on, collaborative environment where customers and our scientists and engineers come together to solve the toughest problems in life science," said MilliporeSigma Chief Executive Udit Batra.

Fourth graders in the Problem Solvers program at Memorial School in Burlington were on hand for the event and got to participate in science-themed projects and activities with MilliporeSigma employees. Burlington Public Schools Superintendent Eric Conti posted several photos from the event on his Twitter feed.
