Gordon Supports Curriculum In Burlington Public Schools

I am a recently retired public school teacher, so education is one of my primary concerns. When Paul Girouard announced his decision to run against State Representative Ken Gordon, I did my homework to discover Paul’s views on public education.

I watched the previous BCAT debate (http://bcattv.org/bnews/top-st... at 30:37 minutes). I heard Mr. Girouard say that if STEM (science, technology, engineering, math - including the science of evolution) is taught in the public schools, so should the “other side”. He justified his position by referring to evolution as only a “theory”.

The “other side” of the “theory” of evolution is creationism, which is a form of bible study. If creationism is taught in a public school, our children will be taught that humans and dinosaurs roamed the earth at the same time, though we know that they existed millions of years apart.

I am shocked that someone who wants to be our state representative would seemingly advocate for the introduction of bible studies in our public school.

Everyone has a right to practice the religion of their choice. However, no one has the right to bring his religious views into public school curriculum. I am concerned that Mr. Girouard does not seem to value, or believe in, the current curriculum of the Burlington Public Schools.

In good conscience, I cannot support his candidacy and urge voters to take a careful look before voting.

Ken Gordon has proven to me over the years as our State Representative that he supports quality education. He advocates for increased state funding for Burlington, averaging 4 percent/year for each of the last 3 years.

Sincerely,

Phyllis Neufeld, Retired Elementary Teacher (40 years)
