BURLINGTON, MA — The following letter to the editor comes from Burlington resident Mildred Nash.

If you are able to watch BCAT’s School Committee candidates’ debate, I think you’ll agree with me that Melissa Massardo is a fresh young voice who will serve us well on the Burlington School Committee. In addition to all her other stellar qualities, I’m especially pleased that she’s taken the lead in a key area of concern for me: Burlington transportation.

As a member of the Town Meeting Transportation Study Committee, I was disheartened to find that numerous studies had been done w/o follow-through. We feared that fate for even one recommendation of a vital, low-hanging fruit: the federally funded “Safe Routes to School” program.

Our school bus transportation is now slowed by the enormous numbers of cars driving students to our schools. This twice-a-day traffic jam is a key reality—one that might be mitigated by this program, which costs Burlington nothing.

Luckily, one parent was listening. Melissa Massardo—joining the Select Board’s subcommittee on transportation—knows how to get a job done. Thanks to her initiative, Burlington’s moving on this no-cost-to-Burlington program at Fox Hill School with events planned for April and May. I was delighted to find such responsiveness! How lucky we are that she is running for School Committee! She’ll bring quality improvement with cost reduction to our town. Please give her your vote on April 9—election day in Burlington!
