No Injuries After Charging Battery Overheats At Lahey Clinic

The computer battery melted down while charging in the hospital's cardiac unit.

BURLINGTON, MA -- A charging computer battery that exploded at Lahey Clinic Monday night caused smoke, fumes but no injuries. Firefighters were called to the Burlington hospital after the battery, which was charging in a wall unit in the cardiac unit, melted and tripped the hospital's smoke alarm system.

Burlington firefighters removed the battery and extinguished it in snow outside. The battery has been turned over to state fire investigators to see if there is a problem with the design of the product.
