Opinion: Time For Burlington To Appoint Treasurer

Another resident writes in support of a "yes" vote on Burlington's ballot question.

The following letter to the editor was submitted in support of Question #1 on the ballot in Burlington's town election on April 6.

I am writing to urge Burlington voters to vote YES on ballot question #1 which would change the position of Treasurer in Burlington from an elected position to an appointed position.More than 80% of Massachusetts communities have an appointed Treasurer handling their finances, and for very good reason.

With an appointed Treasurer, the residents of Burlington can be assured that the person handling our very robust town budget has the background, education and experience to do so. The successful candidate will undergo a rigorous interview process with public oversight. The electoral process insures only that the successful candidate will be a Burlington resident.

With our town Treasurer poised to retire, now is the time to make this change and I ask all Burlington voters to seriously consider this question, and vote YES on Question #1.
