When It Comes To Pay, Burlington Teachers At Head Of The Class

The average Burlington teacher earned $101,854, well above the state average of $78,591.

BURLINGTON, MA -- Teachers for Burlington Public Schools earned an average of $101,854 in 2016-17, according to the National Education Association. That makes them the highest paid public educators in the state. Statewide, educators earned an average of $78,591, ranking Massachusetts tird in average teacher salary among all states.

Brookline was second on the state list, with teachers there earning $101,413. The salary data includes classroom and specialist teacher professional salaries, and professional salaries attributed to professional development days.

Last month, Niche released its comprehensive rankings of the school districts in the state, and Burlington checked in at 50th out of 218 public school districts in Massachusetts. The school research and data company also said the school system was the 35th best place to teach in the state and the 22nd best school district for athletes. Niche gave Burlington Public Schools an overall letter grade of A, including A's for academics, teachers, clubs and activities and health and safety. Later this month, Burlington Town Meeting will consider a warrant article to cover a budget deficit for the fiscal year ended June 30. Part of that over-spending has been attributed to salaries and severances paid to employees asked to resign.
