• Cambridge meetings, Aug. 31-Sept. 7 (csindie.com) — Cambridge residents have a busy civic week ahead, with meetings on preservation grant allocations, school policies on smart glasses and the Protect Act, and a major restaurant rule overhaul. There's also a key transit discussion tied to Healthpeak's huge Alewife redevelopment, including thousands of new homes and a hoped-for commuter rail connection near the Red Line.
• MIT Questions Student's Dimethylmercury Claim (newsmax.com) — Emergency crews in Cambridge responded after an MIT graduate student reported synthesizing the highly toxic chemical dimethylmercury, triggering a multiday hazmat shutdown of the university's Building 18 and decontamination of nearby spaces. New information and initial blood tests now suggest the compound may not actually have been made, but the building remains closed while officials complete cleanup and investigate what was spilled.
• Men's Soccer to Battle Notre Dame on Monday Night (gocrimson.com) — Harvard men's soccer, based in Cambridge, is heading to South Bend on Monday night to face Notre Dame after a strong 4-1 opening win over UMass. The preview highlights returning offensive firepower, standout underclassmen, and a former Crimson goalkeeper now starring for the U.S. World Cup squad, before the team returns to Jordan Field Friday to host Providence.
