CAMBRIDGE, MA — A biotechnology company is marking 25 years in the city with a celebration recognizing its research, employees, and community partnerships.
Amgen Massachusetts will host the event Thursday, Oct. 15, from 1 p.m. to5 p.m. at its Kendall Square facility at 360 Binney St. The celebration will include remarks from company leadership, a panel discussion with former site heads, and appearances by city and state officials.
The speaking program is scheduled for approximately 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., beginning with welcome remarks from Margaret Faul, Amgen's vice president of drug substance technologies and Massachusetts site head. Plans also include a video message from Amgen Chairman and CEO Bob Bradway and remarks from community leaders who have worked with the company over the past 25 years.
Officials listed as participants include Cambridge City Manager Yi-An Huang, Mayor Sumbul Siddiqui, state Sen. Sal DiDomenico, state Rep. Daniel Ryan, and Kendall Square Association Executive Director Beth O'Neill Maloney. A reception for employees and guests will follow the speaking program.
Amgen opened its Cambridge research center in 2001, establishing a presence in Kendall Square as the neighborhood continued developing into a major center for biotechnology research. The company's connection to the property dates to 1992, when it purchased the land where the facility would eventually be built.
The company completed a major renovation of the Cambridge facility in 2017, adding updated laboratories and offices, a laboratory used to scale up drug-development processes, and an interactive lobby highlighting its research and patient stories. At the time, Amgen reported investing approximately $100 million in the facility since 2015.
Amgen's local partnerships have also included support for early-stage biotechnology companies. In 2014, the company became a platinum sponsor of LabCentral, a shared laboratory facility in Cambridge. The agreement allowed Amgen to nominate up to two life sciences and biotechnology startups each year to take up residence in LabCentral's Kendall Square facilities.
