CAMBRIDGE, MA — The Cambridge Police Department is conducting an investigation after "deeply disturbing" posts believed to come from a lieutenant were brought to its attention, according to reports. The investigation comes only a few months after the Cambridge police superintendent admitted to accidentally using the department's official Twitter account to call then-senate candidate Joe Kennedy "another liberal f---ing jerk."

According to the Cambridge Day, the tweets in question came from user @CPD496, believed to be Lt. Shawn Lynch, of Somerville. The account has since been deleted, but internet archives show the account retweeting posts calling Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez "an imbecile," calling Democratic national leadership "the real virus threatening America" and more. A tweet from the account, screenshotted by the Cambridge Day, said "Today's Democrats are American Jihadists," as well as responding to numerous tweets with gifs in support of acts of violence.

The department will investigate and "impose strict discipline" against Lynch if a violation of policies is found, the Cambridge Day reported.

This is not the first time Cambridge police have faced scrutiny over social media in the past few months. In May, Police Superintendent Jack Albert admitted to posting a profane tweet on the department's official Twitter account, saying it was "a lapse of judgement [that is] is something that I will forever carry with me."

The tweet, swiftly deleted after it was posted, called Kennedy "another liberal f---ing jerk who just happens to be better than the clown he's running against."
