Cambridge Police Drafts Policy On Tear Gas And Chemical Weapons

The final policy is expected to go into effect on March 29, 2021 and formally documents what was already in practice.

A policy prohibiting all members of the Cambridge Police Department from acquiring, possessing, discharging, and/or authorizing the discharge of tear gas or any other related chemical weapon in their official capacity with the Department has been drafted and distributed to the Cambridge Police Patrol Officers Association and the Cambridge Police Superior Officers Association for review (see attachment). The final policy is expected to go into effect on March 29, 2021 and formally documents what was already in practice. Prior to this policy, tear gas was not authorized for use by the Cambridge Police Department, nor does the Department utilize or possess tear gas.
