Facebook To Move To Bigger Cambridge Building, Add 500 Jobs

Remember when Facebook was just a start up in a Harvard Dorm room in Cambridge?

CAMBRIDGE, MA – Here's a Facebook memory: In February 2004 Mark Zuckerberg started the company from a dorm room in Cambridge. In June Facebook moved to California. Fast forward to 2013, when Facebook came back to open an engineering office in Cambridge’s Kendall Square neighborhood. Now, four years later (where has the time gone?) Facebook is moving into bigger digs in Kendall.

“We have secured a lease at 100 Binney Street from Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc. to expand our engineering presence in the Boston area as part of our continued commitment to investing in the Boston technology community. We're delighted to be here and excited for what the future holds,” said Ryan Mack, Facebook Boston Site Lead in a statement emailed to Patch.

And by expand, we mean bigger: The space fits 650 people, and since the current office holds a bit more than 100 folks, Facebook could potentially add some 500 jobs, when they move into Biney Street with Bristol-Myers Squibb, according to the Globe.

Though a media representative at Facebook told Patch that "The new space can hold up to 650 people," and added they couldn't share a time frame for adding employees at this juncture.

If Facebook does end up hiring that many people to fill the space, it would presumably make the economic planners and city officials over in Cambridge, extremely happy.

The Facebook Boston page says there are currently 20 positions open, but according to the Boston Globe and Boston Business Journal the company's growth demands more.
