The popular saying “April showers bring May flowers” has an entirely different meaning for spring allergy sufferers. Warmer temperatures, green landscapes and flowers produce an environment that results in sneezing, watering eyes, headache and fatigue.

According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, allergies are the sixth leading cause of chronic illness. Common triggers such as dust, pollen, dander and mold are, unfortunately, inescapable but there are steps you can take to alleviate symptoms.

PREPARE WITH ANTIHISTAMINES

Pollen flourishes in warm, dry weather, aggravating symptoms. Antihistamines, such as Zyrtec or Claritin, will not eliminate symptoms entirely but they will help to relieve sneezing, itching and a runny or stuffy nose. Saline nasal sprays and eye drops are also viable options to flush allergens from the body.

MANAGE YOUR ENVIRONMENT

If you know the pollen count is high, shut your windows and shower after an extended period spent outdoors. To keep allergens from the air in your home, regular vacuuming and dusting, as well as the use of high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters and dehumidifiers will help lessen your exposure.

AVOID TRIGGERS

Many people are sensitized to more than one thing, so it’s important to have an allergy test and determine your personalized allergic triggers. Once the cause of your symptoms is identified , you and your doctor can develop an appropriate allergy treatment plan that minimizes your exposure to your allergic triggers and lets you enjoy the spring.

Remember, the key to navigating this year’s allergy season is to think proactively. Symptomatic management takes time to achieve success. Be patient and experiment with trigger avoidance, homeopathic methods and over-the-counter solutions. If your symptoms don’t improve, CareWell Urgent Care can help you fully understand the cause of your allergies and treat any of these painful or bothersome effects.
