Our Women in Boston Rock Series Continues w/ Liz Borden, Illusions End and Melt Friday July 12th @ Club Bohemia downstairs The Cantab Lounge

Liz Borden is performing Friday July 12th at the downstairs of the legendary Cantab Lounge, 738 Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge, along with Melt - featuring Lindsey Kyte on vocals and the group Illusions End - a group including Melika Fitzhugh and Anne Marie Cleary. Now I wanted to do a profile focusing on Liz Borden, maybe an internet interview via e mail, but when I noticed four women on the bill it changed the context of the story just a bit.

Back in the day Liz Borden was a Boston pioneer. Yes you had Melodye Bushkin fronting Phobia, Barb Kitson (or Barbed Wire) with Thrills, Didi Stewart and the Amplifiers evolving into Girls Night Out, Annie Rock & Roll (a friend of mine just locating the m.i.a. Annie all these years later,) Lady Carolyn and Pamela Ruby Russell, both profiled in this - I will admit it - inadequate but loving series that I really need to spend more time on! and, you know what, Boston embraced more women rockers than most communities. The Runaways had packed The Rathskellar way back in the mid to late 1970s and the Go Go's were on the horizon but women rockers and scenesters like Rita Ratt were all part of the lovable fabric. People today - four decades and more later - do not know what a delightful place the region was. The Club in Cambridge had a great stage where you could see Fox Pass one night and Mick Taylor of the Rolling Stones on another, Buddy Guy in a two hundred seat venue was truly astonishing. The Cantab was downstairs in the 1970s where Club Bohemia is now, some kind of restaurant on the top floor, and oh the Stone Phoenix Coffee House with Andy Paley playing drums for Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers.

Today one wonders, where is Karen DeBiasse and Girl on Top? Is Didi Stewart playing out? Alizon Lissance of Girls Night Out (YES! My investigative fingers in a Facebook search finds Alizon at the Fairmount Grille Sunday July 7th. We need a flow chart for Boston women rockers and maybe the #metoo movement complaint here is not enough ink and other media (digital ink?) to keep track of these creative and feisty musicians.

And yes, Liz, I very much want to do a profile on you when I get the series revved up and the way it needs to be presented to the world. My husband's plane takes off Sunday morning, with me on it. Hoping to make the show before we head back to the West Coast. Love Melt's CD, have never seen them live, and know little about Illusion's End and Robert Bushinsky having left Boston over two decades ago. The problem is trying to get a husband with a business flight on a Sunday morning to come out and rock with me down at the Bohemia dungeon. Would just love to see this show.
