MIT Museum Celebrates Grand Re-Opening of Ganson Exhibit with "An Evening with Arthur Ganson"

In celebration of the grand re-opening of the exhibit Gestural Engineering: The Sculpture of Arthur Ganson, the MIT Museum will host “An Evening with Arthur Ganson” on Tuesday, October 18th from 6:00 – 8:00pm. The evening will include a conversation with Arthur Ganson facilitated by MIT Museum Director, John Durant, followed by an opportunity to visit the exhibition.

Arthur Ganson’s kinetic sculptures are among the most beloved features of the MIT Museum. Press a pedal or turn a crank and you’ll put Ganson’s machines into motion. His sculptures explore the nature of oiled surfaces, object manipulation and slow explosions, and are created from a range of materials that he fabricates or finds.

During the gallery renovation, many of the sculptures were restored and new controls were added to improve accessibility and usability for visitors. Each sculpture now includes a vignette in Arthur’s own words that talks about his process and inspiration behind each piece. In addition, there is a tactile display that gives visitors an opportunity to physically connect with some of the materials and forms Arthur uses to create his sculptures, as well as several videos, including the award-winning short film “Machine with Wishbone” by Randall Okita.

“Whimsical, captivating and witty - all are words used to describe Arthur Ganson’s wonderfully creative kinetic sculptures,” said John Durant, The Mark R. Epstein (Class of 1963) Director of the MIT Museum. “Since the exhibition first opened in 1995 it has been a museum favorite and the newly renovated gallery will make the exhibition better than ever,” said Durant.
