Panera Buys Majority Share in Boston Food Chain

Panera bought in to Tatte Bakery & Cafe, which has five locations, including one in Cambridge.

Panera’s putting its hands in a new venture that is urban and upscale.

The chain has reportedly purchased a majority interest in the Boston-chain Tatte Bakery & Cafe, said Restaurant Business.

The purchase of the five-location breakfast and lunch spot, which has three locations in Cambridge, one in Brookline and one in Boston, is a test in “a possible growth vehicle into residential urban and upscale suburban markets.”

Baker Tzurit Or started Tatte in 2007, baking 20 hours a day in her home kitchen, and bringing her wares to Boston’s farmers’ markets, eventually opening a store in Brookline.
