UPDATE: Red Line Delays Now 'Moderate' in Both Directions
The MBTA is encouraging riders to switch to the commuter rail after a switch problem at Alewife caused severe delays.
The MBTA says the Red Line is suffering from what is now "moderate delays" in both directions Thursday morning due to a switch problem at Alewife.
Riders are being urged to take the commuter rail, which can be found at Braintree, Dorchester, Quincy Center, and JFK/UMass.
The delays were being called 'severe' by the MBTA for about an hour.

The delays come just weeks after the MBTA announced sweeping fare hikes amid protests.
