Science Club for Girls Celebrates BEAM
SCFGLive! is teaming up with American Association of Blacks in Energy and National Grid to celebrate BEAM (Black Energy Awareness Month)

Every Friday in October, Cambridge-based Science Club for Girls (SCFG) crew and special guests will explore all things energy in celebration of BEAM (Black Energy Awareness Month) with American Association of Blacks in Energy and National Grid. The upcoming October 22nd program will explore the amazing world of Electric Vehicles and air via SCFG’s YouTube and Facebook pages live at 4:00 p.m. The episode will be available Xfinity On Demand soon afterwards.
Each SCFGLive! episode highlights special guest scientists—women underrepresented in the STEM fields—and incorporates hands-on STEM experiments virtually, geared to students ranging from grades K-5. The series was created in response to disruptions to in-person learning and underscores SCFG’s commitment to equity of access for girls of color and girls from lower-income backgrounds—particularly against the backdrop of the pandemic. (See program schedule below.)
“As a science-based organization, Science Club for Girls believes in the power of STEM to improve individuals’ lives and our society as a whole—empowering communities with information to keep them safe. We are pleased to be featuring a Pfizer scientist on an upcoming episode of our science show, SCFGLive!, focusing on vaccines,” shared Bonnie Bertolaet, SCFG Executive Director. “Our goal, as with all of our programming, is to make science education more accessible and equitable for families, and especially for our young, emerging scientists and STEM professionals—whether they are in first grade or their first year of college.”

Kids and families from Maine to Virginia can now access SCFG programming and easily find it by saying “Science Club for Girls” into their Xfinity Voice Remote. “We’re proud to provide Science Club for Girls content On Demand to make it easy for kids, parents and aspiring scientists alike to complete hands-on experiments and boost their STEM skills at home,” said Rebecca Fracassa, Director of Community Impact for Comcast’s Greater Boston Region.
SCFG’s newly-appointed Board Chair, Alejandra Carvajal said, "We’re thrilled to be partnering with Comcast to reach an even wider audience with our SCFGLive! online science show—which is an incredible tool in making high-quality STEM education more accessible for girls of color, girls from low-income families, and girls who are first-generation college-bound. What started as a small, home-grown project to reach our community during the pandemic has burgeoned into a highly engaging, professionally-produced regional program. I’m so proud of our team for their creativity in developing and expanding the show, now in Season 3 with over 60,000 views."

Bonnie Bertolaet, SCFG Executive Director added, “SCFGLive! captures the excitement and curiosity of a young audience to become scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians. The show engages girls and the whole family in STEM learning—preparing their creative, inquisitive minds for the new school year and beyond!”

About Science Club for Girls
Science Club for Girls (SCFG) fosters excitement, confidence and literacy in STEM for girls, those who identify with girlhood, and nonbinary youth from underrepresented communities by providing free, experiential programs and by maximizing meaningful interactions with women mentors in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. For 27 years, SCFG has been addressing gender and racial inequities in STEM and increasing opportunities for girls from diverse backgrounds. With women making up only 24 percent of the STEM workforce—and Black and Hispanic women at less than 4 percent—SCFG addresses a critical need, offering a continuum of engaging activities in STEM for K-8 girls, leadership experiences for high school girls, and adult mentoring by committed women in STEM.
