Three Tips for a Fun and Safe Easter Holiday
by Dr. Jack Cornwell, medical director CareWell Urgent Care

With March flying by and the warmth of spring beginning to settle in, the Easter Bunny will soon be paying us a visit, as our favorite pastel-colored holiday comes once again. Before you prepare this year’s baskets and scatter Easter eggs throughout the hunting grounds, here are a few simple tips to ensure you and your kids have a safe and joyful Easter holiday.
Picking the Right Candy
Like many holidays, candy has become a hallmark of almost any Easter celebration. However, it’s important to be cautious when choosing which sweets to fill plastic eggs and baskets with this Easter. When purchasing candy for the big day, avoid anything with nuts. As one of the more common food allergies, candies containing nuts can quite often lead to allergic reactions and put a damper on your springtime celebrations. Additionally, steer clear of any hard candies like jawbreakers that present a potential choking hazard.

Plan out the Hunting Grounds
First and foremost, establish boundaries. Not only does this decrease the chances of your child wandering aimlessly with no hope of finding eggs, but it also ensures a safe and easily manageable area of play. Also avoid hiding eggs in areas where bacteria or other hazards are present like near trash cans, on window sills, or where pets frequently relieve themselves.

Prepare Your Eggs
Before handling any eggs, use warm water to wash your hands thoroughly. When storing eggs, never use the refrigerator door; the carton is not only safer but also mitigates exposure to other food items. If eggs stay unrefrigerated for longer than two hours, toss them out right away. And finally, never use cracked eggs, which run a higher risk for salmonella.
