Canton Breaks Ground On New Galvin Middle School

CANTON, MA — A major school construction project in Canton reached a new milestone Thursday.

Students, town leaders and state officials gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony for the replacement of William H. Galvin Middle School. The event marked the formal start of construction on the new school.

Galvin students opened the ceremony with musical performances featuring songs by Weezer and Metallica, along with music from the DreamWorks film "Madagascar."

State Rep. William C. Galvin, state Sen. Paul R. Feeney and state Treasurer Deborah B. Goldberg were among the speakers who highlighted the importance of investing in Canton's students and schools.

The project has an approved cost of $241.76 million, with an anticipated $74.35 million reimbursement from the Massachusetts School Building Authority.

Canton voters approved the project's debt exclusion in December 2024 by a vote of 74.2 percent. The new school is expected to open in September 2028 while the existing Galvin Middle School remains in use during construction, according to the project website.

Crews spent the summer extending and paving a loop road, installing retaining walls and drilling 20 geothermal wells to a depth of 800 feet. Upcoming work includes installing underground utilities, building elevator shafts, pouring concrete slabs and erecting steel during the fall and winter, according to the latest project update.

The existing school is scheduled to be demolished in fall 2028 to make room for new athletic fields and parking. The full project is expected to be completed in July 2029.

The project also calls for rebuilding the Mutch Rink near Raven Road. Project officials said the rink is expected to reopen during the 2029-30 school year.
