Bank of Canton Donates $1,000 for Annual Spelling Bee Jan. 11

The Canton Alliance for Public Education (CAPE) has received a $1,000 grant from Bank of Canton to support its annual Spelling Bee, bringing the Bank’s total donations to an estimated $5,000 for the competition at Canton High School.

“Bank of Canton has consistently supported CAPE as the top sponsor of our Spelling Bee,” said Kristin Mirliani, Co-President of CAPE.  “We are thrilled that the Bank again recognizes the importance of this key townwide event, where student teams from all the schools, as well as adult teams, come together to showcase their spelling skills.  The Bee has become an important tradition celebrating public education in Canton, and Bank of Canton, as well as other corporate and individual donors, help to keep it going.”

“We are honored to do our part to support public education in Canton,” said Stephen P. Costello, President, Bank of Canton. “Bank of Canton is proud to support local organizations like CAPE that advocate for brighter futures for the children in our community, as well as sponsor events like the annual Spelling Bee that play a significant role in bringing together various age-groups with an emphasis on teamwork.”

The donation by Bank of Canton has been used to purchase T-shirts for the student teams, trophies and plaques, booklets to help students prepare, programs, flyers and signage at the high school grounds.  The Spelling Bee is one of CAPE’s biggest fundraisers.

CAPE is a non-profit, community-based foundation dedicated to enhancing Canton’s commitment to excellence in public education.  Staffed entirely by volunteers, it seeks to promote innovative and productive programs that challenge students and teachers to achieve their true potential.  Since 2004, CAPE has awarded 60 grants totaling more than $160,000.
