How to Find Your Jewish Great-Grandparents, Even Though You Know It’s Impossible

CANTON, MA—January 20, 2013 - Where did our great-great grandparents come from?  What were their names?  What did they do; were they farmers, goldsmiths, or political leaders? Does the family bloodline include notable figures?  The upcoming genealogy event at Temple Beth
Abraham will help you answer these thought-provoking questions.

“Since we have heard people’s increasing interest in learning more about their genealogy, we decided to invite an expert to help guide us to get the process started,” explained Renée Tepper, Adult Education chairman. This talk will be an introduction to Jewish genealogical research for beginners and those who want to go further.  We will teach basic strategies and hints for researching your Jewish ancestors.  We will look at both online and local
resources to help you in your search: a survey with many examples of the US records you need to use to find your 19^th/early 20^th century immigrant ancestors from Eastern Europe, the repositories and web sites where you can access them, some specialized Jewish sources, and the basics of how to use that information to begin to get back to the “old country.”

This event, How to Find Your Jewish Great-Grandparents, Even though You Know It’s Impossible will be led by
Meredith Hoffman of the Jewish Genealogy Society of Greater Boston.  Meredith is a professional genealogist who
specializes in researching 19^th/early 20^th century Jewish
immigrant ancestors and enjoys solving difficult Jewish name problems.  She holds a degree in Linguistics from UC
Berkeley and a certificate from Boston University’s Genealogical Research Program.  Ms. Hoffman is the founding editor of the Success! Stories webzine on JewishGen.org.  She regularly lectures and gives workshops on beginning and advanced topics in genealogy, with a special focus on Jewish genealogy topics and tools.

This free event, will be held at Temple Beth Abraham, 1301 Washington Street, Canton, MA, and is open to the entire community.  All are welcome to join us on Sunday, February 3 from 11:00am -12:30pm.  The 1 ½ hour program will begin at 11:00am.
