“I am proud to serve the Foundation as Spokesperson because I want to help change attitudes on the importance of responsibly harvesting trees- the world’s largest renewable resource. And I believe the best place to change this perception is in our children’s schools,” MacDonald said.

“Schoolchildren, and in many cases, their teachers need to know that not only is it okay to harvest trees in North America, it’s necessary,” MacDonald added.

MacDonald is the first person to serve the Foundation in this capacity and his new role is critical to the long-term vision of the organization.

“While the mission of the Foundation remains in providing science-based educational materials to teachers and children, the delivery method is evolving. Tommy’s participation is vital to this evolution and growth,” said Crystal Oldham, Foundation Executive Director.

MacDonald’s first project is the video production of the Foundation’s flagship program, Truth About Trees.

“Created in 2006, Truth About Trees has reached countless children and its message of properly managing forests as a means to keep them healthy, as well as obtain all of the necessary items we use in our everyday lives has always relied on a live presenter…the video version will allow Tommy to reach classrooms and other educational facilities across the United States and Canada in an effortless manner…the teacher can just pop the video in and let Tommy take it from there,” Oldham said.

In addition to the video production of Truth About Trees, MacDonald will accompany the Foundation in elementary school visits and tree plantings.

“Although the message is important, I’m most excited about working hands on with children and encouraging them to learn about the forest products industry. There is so much to teach them and I am just pleased to have the opportunity to make a difference in their education,” MacDonald said.

Founded in 1989, the Foundation, a 501c3 organization, has been involved in a variety of educational programs and activities throughout the United States and anada. Since its creation, NHLA has supported its efforts and hosted its
office in the NHLA headquarters, located in Memphis.
