Love in music, from today’s popular music to the great operas, the occasional sadness of country and western songs and many masterworks of classical music, is an omnipresent theme.
On Sunday, April 28, at the West Middle School, 271 West St. in Brockton, at 3:00 PM, the Brockton Symphony will play works which show profane love, tragic innocent love and the love earned by a woman who talks for a really long time. Maestro James M. Orent conducts the BrSO, including Canton members Irene Kelley and Jonathan K.S. So, violins; Susan Caplan, flute; and Wayne King, trumpet.
The concert begins with the hauntingly beautiful to darkly exhilarating Danse Bacchanale, the mockery of Samson, from the biblical story of love, betrayal and revenge depicted in Saint-Saëns’ opera Samson and Delilah.

The next selection, a romantic and dramatic symphonic poem, is Tchaikowsky’s Romeo and Juliet, a musical rendition of the tragic story of star-crossed lovers whose families are sworn enemies. Herein is some of Tchaikowsky’s most powerful writing, making optimum use of all of the forces of the orchestra.
The program concludes with the story of Scheherazade. Written by Rimsky-Korsakow, this sensual, dynamic piece depicts musically the tale of a queen who saved her life and won love by telling episodic stories for 1001 nights. The beautiful violin solos will be played by BrSO concertmistress, Kristina Nilsson.
