Canton Community Theatre Carry a Cross to Bear in 'Doubt'
Doubt: The Parable" comes to Canton - April 8, 9 at 8:00 p.m., April 15, 16 at 8:00 p.m.
One woman’s sense of right and wrong strongly tests her faith and calling, setting the spotlight for Canton Community Theatre (CCT) and its upcoming production of “Doubt, a Parable” by John Patrick Shanley, which opens Friday April 8th.
A parable is described as a simple story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson. So it should come as no surprise that the main character facing this conflict is both a nun and head of a grade school. Set in the Bronx in 1964, it is structured as a clash of wills and generations between the austere and traditional Sister Aloysius and the laid back young Father Flynn, who may be perceived as being a little too casual, too personal with the schoolboys in his charge. Concerning the Sister is the priest’s unusual interest in the Catholic school’s first and only black student. So much so, that is leads her to initiate a much heated conference with Father Flynn and later confronts the student’s mother, who cannot fathom what is being said. What follows next is a direct outcome of when a clash of wills and ego test the boundaries of one’s belief in something bigger than themselves.
Under the direction of Renee Hanscom of Canton, close-knit cast features Canton native Kelly Lane from Braintree, Mike Whalen from Weymouth, Jen Walsh from Milton, and Sonya Joyner from Dorchester.
