Canton Elementary School Students to “Tour the Country”

Students Learn Geography and History With Discover America Program

Students at the Lt. Peter M. Hansen Elementary School recently got the chance to learn about what it might be like to travel across the country as Humboldt Storage and Moving of Canton brought the United Van Lines Discover America program to the school.

Each year, the team at Humboldt pays a visit to students to introduce them to “Driver Dave” as he embarks on a cross county journey. “Driver Dave,” presents a unique and exciting educational program that discusses geography, history, road safety and how to handle moving to another location; sometimes across the county.

The goal of the Discover America program is to bring geography and history to life in an exciting and interactive way. Geared toward upper elementary and middle school students, the crew at Humboldt shows up in a tractor trailer at the school, visits the classroom to explain “Driver Dave’s” upcoming journey across the United States and then give students a tour of the truck all in an effort to educate students. Students also get the opportunity to use their math skills to calculate mileage and fuel and they also hear about safety when it comes to moving.

“We always enjoy a visit to our local schools,” says Jim Sullivan, president of Humboldt Storage and Moving. “Along with the lessons that each student can take away from this program, they also learn how to deal with the stress of moving in the event they have to move with their family.”

The program runs through May 2018, “Driver Dave’s” route will interactively, through the classroom, “transport” students to 10 cities across the United States, including New York City, Denver and San Francisco. Each month, students will receive letters from “Driver Dave” along with picture books, postcards and various other souvenirs, highlighting the significant landmarks and sites located in each city. Students will discuss this material, calculate “Driver Dave’s” mileage and trace his route on a U.S. map.
