Canton Firefighter Served His Country After 9/11

Canton Firefighter Jason Coleman enlisted in the army ten years ago, following the terrorist attacks.

Canton Firefighter Jason Coleman was just 21 on . After working a shift at the Park Plaza Hotel in Boston, he went home to sleep. 

Instead of sleeping, he turned on the television that morning. Like so many Americans, he watched the coverage of the hijacked planes hitting the Twin Towers.

Feeling all kinds of emotions, by the end of that day, Coleman had made a decision.

“I enlisted immediately after 9/11,” said. “It was the greatest sense of duty that I could do to serve my country after the attack.”

He enlisted in the United States Army to serve his country. Coleman, now 31 and living in Wareham, served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army from February 2002 to February 2007 as a member of the military police. The Canton fireman was stationed in Iraq for one tour of duty.

On that September morning ten years ago, Coleman said he got out of bed and actually went back to work to be with coworkers that day. Later, he started to think about what he could do.

He mulled over his choices with his family and decided on serving his country.

“Enlistment was the option,” he said.

Currently, he continues his dedication to service by working as firefighter for the town. He is a firefighter and EMT and has served on the Canton Fire Department since April 2008.
