Crews Kept Busy During Irene, Several Canton Residents Still Without Power

Tropical Storm Irene caused wires and trees down in Canton, street closings and about 1,800 without power.

Canton crews have been busy today. The Canton Fire Department has responded to over 50 calls for due to according to Chief Charles Doody.

The storm has also damaged at least 10 homes in town, Doody said. All were hit by falling trees, he said.

As of Sunday evening, Elm, Greenlodge, Bolivar, Washington and Pleasant streets are closed, along with Pleasant Circle, Capper Drive and Sawyer Road.

"NSTAR reports 1,855 customers in Canton are without power or about 18% of the town," Doody said Sunday evening.

"Rubin Court is currently without power and we are working with the Housing Authority to see if any of the residents need to be sheltered," the fire chief said.

Today, Emergency Management comprised of the Canton Police, Canton Fire and DPW, "set up a unified command post at Canton Police to manage the multiple calls for service," Doody said.

Some residents on Greenwood Road are taking care of their own cleanup. A group of neighbors are cutting down a tree that fell, blocking off the entire street.

Mike Rubin, a Greenwood neighbor said the scene was wild tonight.

"It's nuts," Rubin said. "It's like a war-zone here. Lots of people are very upset."

Rubin said some residents who are doctors and nurses need to drive to work and cannot because the tree is blocking them from getting out.

Greenwood Road is also without power and phone service this evening and has had no power for the past eight hours, according to Rubin.
