Project SAVE Walkathon to Raise Awareness About Substance Abuse
Project S.A.V.E Holds Walkathon to Raise Awareness About Substance Abuse at Canton High School Athletic Track
CANTON, Mass.- On Sunday, October 22, 2017, CHS community problem solving team Project SAVE (Substance Abuse Victim Empowerment) held a walkathon to raise awareness about substance abuse at the Canton High School Track. Many members of the community participated to show their support for one of the most pressing causes in society today, including Senator Walter F. Timilty and Senator Thomas W. Theodore, as well as Fire Chief Charles Doody and Police Chief Ken Berkowitz.
To commence the event, members of Project SAVE introduced their project. Anvitha Addanki, 10th grade member of Project SAVE, stated their hope as to “lend a helping hand to people afflicted by substance abuse, as well as educating their community and raising awareness for the cause.” Ciara O’Connor, also in 10th grade, explained the percentages of high school students currently using illegal substances.10th grader Sydney Weng described how the project envisioned “positive change and compassion being spread through the community” after the success of the project. Jenny Mazzola presented the core mission of the project: “to help victims of substance abuse and the community regarding the issue.” Following the presentation, Senator Walter F. Timilty announced the start and led all the participants to begin. Many participants conveyed their best wishes for the success of the project, and many came to the members to learn more about substance abuse prevention and future events.
