Sheriff Bellotti Unveils New Program for Canton Seniors

Norfolk County Sheriff and Canton kick off safety program for senior citizens.

Norfolk County Sheriff Michael G. Bellotti kicked off his Yellow Dot safety program in Canton recently while local officials continue to praise the program.

The free-of-charge program is designed to provide crucial medical information to emergency responders in the event that a senior citizen is involved in an auto accident.

“The Yellow Dot program allows emergency responders to a car accident to know what medical conditions a senior citizen may have and which medications he or she may be taking,” Sheriff Bellotti said. “This helps them quickly determine which medical treatment is safest and best suited to help the injured person.”

Sheriff Bellotti announced the kickoff of the Canton Yellow Dot program on Nov. 7 at a meeting at 660 Washington St. Among those attending were Canton , Fire Lt. Brian Marshall and Council on Aging Outreach Director Robin Giampa.

When people sign up for the program, they are given a highly visible yellow dot decal for the rear windshield of their car. If they are in an accident, the decal alerts emergency responders to check the glove compartment for a file listing medications that person is taking and other pertinent health information.

Yellow Dot is part of a group of programs run through Sheriff Bellotti’s Triad program, which is aimed at helping senior citizens. Yellow Dot is similar to Sheriff Bellotti’s File of Life program, which lists important medical information in a folder kept in a highly visible place inside a person’s home.

The Yellow Dot program is up and running in Cohasset, Foxborough, Norfolk and Bellingham in addition to Canton, and the program is expected to be available in other Norfolk County towns in the coming months.

Anyone wishing to learn more about the Yellow Dot program should call the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office at 781-751-3516. Canton residents may also sign up for the program at a Council on Aging meeting on November 29 between 10:00 a.m. and noon at 660 Washington St.
