Students Step into the Spotlight Tonight at Canton High School Recital Night

Students will perform tonight at 7:00 p.m. at Canton High.

, Performing Arts Coordinator for Canton schools, is excited about tonight’s recital at the high school. It is billed as an “Evening of Solo and Small Ensemble Performances."

“It is exciting because so many students are working on music that we might not otherwise hear them perform,” she said. "Also, the performing arts staff believe it is important to provide a variety of performance formats for the students and this is one of a few chances they will have to perform solos.”

The program will include solos and duets, and a wide range of performances, both vocal and instrumental. Tonight's show will feature an array of genres including jazz, pop, classical and ragtime, and composers ranging from Taylor Swift to Robert Schumann, with Scott Joplin, Beyonce and Beethoven thrown in for good measure.

The recital will feature students in grades six through eight who signed up to perform a solo or duet. Some students take private lessons and receive a "coaching" session with the accompanist before the recital.

While students do not have to take private lessons to participate in Recital Night, Sarah Collmer thinks they are important. “Lessons and coaching are so important in developing musicianship and skills along with preparation for events such as this one," she said.

The recital kicks off at 7:00 p.m. at tonight.
