The cooler weather and pumpkins in the store serve as a reminder that Halloween is just around the corner. Soon, little kids will be parading through their neighbors looking for candy while dressed as princesses, ghosts, goblins, and vampires. What does any of this have to with skin care? Well, not much but it’s a great time of year to learn about the hottest new trend in skincare: the Vampire Facelift.

A Vampire Facelift, sometimes called a Vampire Facial, brings many things to mind but before you start imagining Dr. Frankenstein and Bella Lugosi opening up a medspa together, let’s talk about what a Vampire Facelift is, and, also, what it is not. A Vampire Facelift is not actually a facelift or any other sort of surgical procedure. In fact, it is no more invasive than Botox or injectable fillers. A trained doctor or nurse takes a small amount of blood from the client and processes the blood in machine to extract platelets (blood cells that stop bleeding). The extracted platelets form a liquid referred to by nurses and doctors as platelet-rich fibrin matrix, or PRFM. The PRFM is then either infused into the entire face using a derma-pen or injected by the nurse or doctor into areas such as nasal-labial folds (the lines that form from the sides of our nose to our lips), smile lines, and other areas of the face that one would normally use a filler such as Juvederm or Radiesse to smooth out the skin.
