Melrose YMCA Sharks Swim Their Way to Championship Meet

They may look small, but don’t let their size fool you, they are a force to be reckoned with in the pool.  Swimmers, Cleverina Cong (Malden), Ellie Walsh (Melrose) and Lauren Connors (Charlestown) of the Melrose YMCA Sharks have made multiple cuts to earn a spot at the 14 and Under New England Age Group Championship meet being held at Harvard University from July 27th through the 30th

The three girls have been swimming with the YMCA for many years. Cleverina started years ago when she was 6; she is now 12. Ellie, 9, started a year and a half ago having never been on a swim team. Lauren, 9, came to the Y team from the Charlestown Boys and Girls club and has made quite a name for herself.

The three are not new to Championship meets; they travelled to White River Junction Vermont in February for the winter season USA New England Meet.

The cut times for these meets are quite difficult and only the best in the area make them. To have three girls make the cuts for both winter and summer seasons is a great accomplishment.

“I am so proud of how hard the girls work. All three of them have shown amazing commitment and team spirit throughout their time on the team. They are great role models to have and I know they will continue to improve and reach their goals,” commented Laura McCormack, Head Coach of the Melrose YMCA Sharks.

Cleverina, Ellie and Lauren will be swimming on Saturday, Sunday and Monday at Harvard.
