Boston Police Win Basketball Rematch Against Townies

BPD beat the teens 65-58 in what was a highly anticipated rematch.

Article provided by Boston Police Department.

On Wednesday, October 19, 2011 the District A-1 Basketball team squared off in a highly anticipated rematch after officer suffered a difficult loss this summer against a talented group of teens from Charlestown. Wednesday’s game was played at the Community Center located on Medford Street in Charlestown. During the game this summer, the Charlestown youths handed the Officers there first and only loss of the season. They soundly whooped the Officers by 17 points, 57-40. After that game, the Officers, although thoroughly defeated, demanded a rematch. The coach, Pete Washington, graciously accepted the challenge.

The game which was played in front of a small but lively crowd see-sawed back in forth throughout the first three periods. At the start of the fourth period it appeared that the momentum was swinging in favor of the team from Charlestown. It appeared that once again, youth would prevail. In the first game, the Officers kept pace with the young ballers from Charlestown until the final minutes of the game. They eventually ran out of gas and the team from Charlestown pulled away. The same scenario appeared to be taking place in this game. The Townies went on a shooting spree and built up a six point lead. However unlike the first game, the officers did not succumb to the pressure. They chipped away at the lead and went up by 3 points. The Townies cut the lead to one point thanks to a nice move to the basket by Gabriel Moran. He was also fouled on the play. He had a chance to tie the game up with a free throw. He missed and the ball was rebounded by John Shaughnessy. The Officers came down court and calmly moved the ball around eventually finding Shaughnessy open for a jumper at the foul line. This increased the lead back to 3 points. The Townies would not get any closer. They would eventually end up losing by seven points 65-58. This was their only lost in the BPD sponsored events.

The Officers were led by John Shaughnessy. He pumped in 21 points, followed by Allan Kelley with 14, including 4 3 pointers. Mark Loewen chipped in with 13 points. The Townies leading scorer was Tyler Johnson. He threw down 15 points.

We would like to thank the Community Center for all of their help in hosting this event and Papa Ginos for the pizza. Also Coach Pete Washington deserves a lot of credit for his dedication to the youths of Charlestown. He has put together a group of talented young men.
