Air purifiers: Recommended for owners of furry and feathered animals:
Why an air purifier is important if one owns any kind of furry, feathered, or even a scaly pet.
This is a relatively short post, but I feel that it should be posted, in order for people to not only preserve and protect their own health, but that of their pets as well.
Furry and feathered pets are known to produce dander and shed all over the place, and, for people with air-born allergies of any kind, that can make them worse. Many medical professionals now advocate that anybody with mild to moderate allergies, or people who wish to avoid developing allergies in the future, who are pet owners, get a good air purifier with a HEPA (high efficiency particulae arrest) filter, since the HEPA filter actually traps the majority of the particulae, dust, fir and dander, as opposed to diffusing it back out into the air and spreading it around.
As the owner of a Congo African Grey, I have a Standard-sized Austin Air Pet Machine, which picks up 99.97 percent of the powder and regular feather dander on my parrot. African Greys, Amazons, Cockatiels and Cockatoos are all powder-down birds, meaning that they produce a rather fine, white and somewhat oily and sticky powder, naturally, to insulate and protect them. When the bird flaps its wings, preens or ruffles its feathers, or shakes its body, this fine, white powder becomes airborne. Long-term heavy exposure to this powder down can and sometimes will make people ill, causing them to develop allergic alveolitis (an allergic lung infection). Also, since birds have extremely small air passages to begin with, it's also no good for the bird to breathe in its own dust, either. If one looks online, there are a number of different air purifiers on the market, different brands, and Austin Air is among the most recommended air purifiers. I recommend starting out with a google search, which often yields a gold mine of information.

One also must take into account the size of one's apartment or wherever one resides, while considering an air purifier. Besides Austin Air, IQ air is also recommended, and there a some others, as well, and filters should be changed if and when needed. In addition to removing most pet dander, etc, an air purifier also helps remove many heavy pet odors, and other odors around the house.
Since I've gotten an air purifer for Aziza, I have cultivated the opinion that anybody who owns a furry, feathered, or even a scaly animal such as a reptile, would be wise to obtain an air purifier for their house, allergies or no allergies, in order to preserve and protect the health of their pet(s), as well as their own health.
