Charlestown Navy Yard News, plight of the homeless, new non-profit Home Away Boston, host families wanted, Save the Date, Shangri la in the Navy Yard, real estate - just the facts

Welcome to the Navy Yard Views monthly blog. Please feel free to comment—call 617-424-1988, text or email kdempsey@alliancerelo.com.

Sorry so late to post this month—it's a very busy time of year. Last month I shared a story about how Bear and I met a man sleeping in a dumpster while out for an early morning walk in the Yard. The plight of the homeless has always been near and dear to my heart. When I was growing up, in upstate NY, a favorite family outing was to watch the planes land at the Glens Falls airport. Driving to and from the airport on the fringe of town our parents always made sure we were aware of those less fortunate. Back then the homeless built shelters out of discarded appliance boxes.

Last week I was introduced to an entirely different kind of homelessness when I attended a fundraiser for "Home Away Boston." This charity is providing homes right here in the Yard for families of children that are undergoing cancer treatment at MGH. If anyone is interested in learning more about this charity go to www.homeawayboston.org.

Another nonprofit program, Hospitality Homes, was the first program of its kind in the nation. It’s a bit different from Home Away Boston as the organization has about 150 host families who invite the visiting families to stay in their homes. If you would like more information on how to host a family contact Marie Cullen Oliver at mariecullenoliver@comcast.net.

The new restaurant for Pier 6 which would replace the former "Tavern on the Water" is not a done deal. Word on the street is that the permitting process could be held up.
