Charlestown Carnival Still Without Location

Organizers continue efforts to revive an old Bunker Hill Day tradition.

have hit a snag: organizers haven’t found a location where they can hold the event.

Neighborhood Councilor Bill Galvin told the assembly Tuesday that he has yet to schedule a public hearing on the proposed event because he can’t do so until lead organizer Sean Boyle tells Galvin where the event will be.

Boyle said Tuesday that he originally wanted to hold the event at The Neck, but the city’s Parks and Recreations department doesn’t allow carnivals in city parks.

Right now, Galvin said, the group doesn’t have another location and “there’s only so many locations in Charlestown that are big enough.”

The group discussed using land at Bunker Hill Community College, but a motorcycle group has a contract to use one of the school’s parking lots during the period when the carnival would need it.

Boyle said that, at present, he’s trying to work with Massport to hold the event somewhere on its 80 acres of land along Terminal Street, but time is running out to lock down a location.

Boyle said that he originally aimed to find a location by March 1 to give him enough time to file the appropriate papers with the city. Now, he said, he has moved his deadline to April 1.

“I’m going to make it happen,” Boyle said. “Too many people want it to happen.”

Boyle said he has also solicited the help of city councilor Sal LaMattina, to whom Boyle recently presented a pro-carnival petition with 300 signatures.
