Charlestown Harborview Teams up with Big Brother, Big Sister Foundation to Give Back

Big Brother, Big Sister picks up donated clothing each Thursday.

The Harborview Navy Yard in Charlestown offers local residents a scenic area in which to live, but through an ongoing partnership also offers them the chance to give back to the community at large.

Each Thursday, Big Brothers, Big Sisters picks up saleable items from a donation bin at the Harborview property, and uses 100 percent of the proceeds from those sales to fund mentoring programs in the Greater Boston area, as well as in New Hampshire and Maine.

“It gives residents an opportunity to clean out extra items and support a worth charity at the same time,” said Harborview Director of Operations Scot Ste. Marie, who partnered with the Big Brother, Big Sister Foundation in 2010 by welcoming a donation bin on Harborview’s property.

“Generous partners like Harborview allow us to serve more kids,” said Steve Beck, BBBSF Executive Director, in a statement. “Their willingness to help is so appreciated it.”

Moreover, Harborview works to hold regular events and drives, such as a coat drive held last January. BBBSF is invited to participate in such events, including collaborations with Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Charlestown, the property of which lies just across the street from Harborview.

Harborview hosted a street-wide collection event at which contributors received a raffle ticket for a pair of Boston Red Sox tickets.

“We are planning to hold quarterly BBBSF National events in our area,” Marie added. “It’s a great partnership.”
