Charlestown High Basketball Is Back

After winning the city title in Boston last season, the team is in the spotlight.

This winter The Townies aren't just getting coverage in Charlestown.  They have been covered in two Boston Globe articles, and ESPN's Boston site has an article with video of players and coaches.

Yesterday's win over BC High was summarized well in this section from a Boston Globe article on teams around the Boston area:

Charlestown 77, BC High 62 - Senior point guard Rony Fernandez had 23 points and eight assists for the top-ranked Townies.

“For us its all about defense,’’ said Charlestown coach Edson Cardoso. “We practice our defense for 1 hour 20 minutes of every practice, so we can keep pressuring the ball in the fourth with the same energy as we did in the first.’’

Charlestown took a 44-29 lead into halftime, powered by its halfcourt defense and a 12-point outburst in the second from Omar Orriols (16 points), who knocked down four 3-pointers in the quarter. Charlestown sophomore Taris Wilson added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

A longer profile of the team was also in the Globe, where Globe writer Seth Lakso said the Townies are emerging as "a favorite," and that the team is going to "return even stronger."  He also identified one player in particular as an offensive standout, saying, "Forward Tyrese Hoxter has emerged as the Townies’ top scorer after averaging 14 points and eight rebounds as a sophomore," and also recognized Iser Barnes as the team's top defender, saying he averaged 3 steals off the bench per game the past season.

Forward Tyrese Hoxter is also in a video on the ESPN article, where he talks about fouling out at the game against BC High.  "Of course I'd rather stay in the game," he says, "but at the same time, I want to be aggressive for my teammates."

Other folks with video interviews include the Townies' coach, Cardoso, the coach at BC High, Bill Loughnane, and Charlestown players Omar Orriols and Tyrik Jackson.  On the Townies' win, Coach Loughnane told ESPN, "They got a couple wide shots, and they hit them.  That was the big difference."
