More than 800 students from 50+ Boston public schools jammed the three halls of the Boston Teachers Union, Thursday, to compete in the first-ever city-wide math competition. Students from around the city from grades 3 through 12 came to show off their math skills and participate in the days activities.
“The turnout far exceeded our expectations which resulted in some last minute scrambling, but we are extremely proud of the teachers and students who participated in the competition,” said Richard Stutman, President of the BTU. “I want to thank the 75+ teachers who helped prepare their student for this competition and helped to make this such a resounding success. We look forward to hosting and sponsoring this event for many years to come,” added Stutman.

As the day unfolded, Mayor Thomas Menino and Superintendent Carol Johnson joined President Stutman in welcoming the students, who were both enthusiastic and excited to compete in the competition. All students who attended will be receiving ribbons and certificates of completion that will be signed by the mayor, the superintendent and the BTU president. They will also be given commemorative t-shirts

“We thank and commend all students for their participation. Scores from the middle school and high school level will be released shortly. Four teachers in particular are to be thanked for their help--Marisa Bober of West Roxbury HS, Michael Sheehan of South Boston, Ellen Latham of Umana, and Maura McDonough from the Harvard Kent. Each drafted problems for the event and helped in the organization. We would also like to thank the many other teachers who helped to put together the event, Linda Davenport, Sherry Sajdak and Willeka Green from the Math Office, for providing great assistance in the organization of this event,” said Stutman.
