East Boston Defeats Charlestown High Boys Basketball 68-58

Charlestown was top in the rankings, but Eastie took them to task.

Last night was a tough one for the Townies, and both the Boston Globe and ESPN Boston covered their loss.

It wasn't all bad news, though: in the Globe story their writers are reporting that the East Boston Coach, Malcolm Smith, called Charlestown High player Tyrese Hoxter "the most talented player in the state."

Also in the article, CHS Coach Edson Cardoso explained the loss as, “We just had one of those off nights.  There’s a real rivalry between our programs. We don’t like to lose to Eastie, some of our guys took it pretty hard, but in the end will learn from this and move forward," and Coach Smith concurred.

“This is one of the fiercest rivalries around,” Smith said. “It doesn’t matter if they’re ranked first or 20th, you can throw all that stuff out when these two teams play each other.”

The game summary on ESPN Boston elaborated on the rivalry.  As writer Tom Layman said, "The two teams have now squared off four times in the past 12 months -- with each team winning twice -- and it wouldn't be far-fetched to see the City Championship go through one of these two schools in the new calendar year."

In a video interview on ESPN Boston, Coach Smith explained his dominating strategy for the game.  "More than anything else, we really prepared to stop Tyrese," and the statistics of the game show he was a force.  Layman explains that Hoxter "finished with 10 of the 12 Townies points in the third quarter and ended the night with a game-high 27 points. Most of his work was done at the foul line, where he sunk 11-of-16 attempts."

As to how the Townies will deal with the loss despite a high-scorer, the Globe reports that Cardoso's plan is “to sit down and watch the game film and go over what we need to do to get back on track."
