Celebrating Women: Living a Healthy, Vibrant Life!

More than 1,000 area women will gather at Everett High School to learn about women’s health issues and honor local women from the harbor communities as role models of good health.

The free event will be held at Everett High School, 100 Elm Street, Everett, MA.  "Celebrating Women" is a multi-generational community health fair and will offer health education, prevention and screening services.  This year's theme is "Women: Moving Through the Ages" featuring guest speakers Wayne Wescott, PhD, Director of the exercise Science Program at Quincy College is a dynamic researcher, teacher, author of 24 fitness books including, Strength Training Past 50 and Youth Strength Training, and Raheem “Rae” Bararka, ACE-CPT, CFM, Director of Fitness & Employee Wellness Program, MGH Revere HealthCare Center.  Rae will have an interactive presentation featuring some of his students who represent a broad range of ages.  All of this designed to have guests leave inspired with a spirit of “Yes, that’s something I can do to keep Moving Through the Ages”.

Activities will include an intergenerational health fair, demonstrations, lectures and discussions, light supper, health screenings, health prevention and education, and community awards for women who exemplify living a healthy, vibrant life.  Special guest moderator will be Dr. Mallika Marshall, MGH Physician and Medical Director for the Internet's medical news and information source: Everyday Health; and seen frequently on Everyday Health, a weekly television show on ABC stations.  She is currently a contributing medical reporter for New England Cable News.

Six women will receive the Celebrating Women award from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).  These women include:  Felicia Coward, Charlestown; Lee Forgione, Chelsea; Joanne Stroud-Lebeau, Everett; Mary Romano, North End; Cindy Evans, Revere; and Ruth Bernstein, Winthrop.  These women illustrate how women can be role models of good health by using their wisdom and life experience to help other women improve their health and have a positive impact on their community, even while leading busy lives. 

The award ceremony is a part of the ninth Celebrating Women, Living a Vibrant, Healthy Life, an event that promotes women’s health.  MGH-Chelsea physician Mallika Marshall, MD, will once again present the Celebrating Women Awards on behalf of MGH.  The award winners are selected by their community health centers, and young women from the community will introduce each recipient at the ceremony by reading a brief biography she has written after interviewing the woman. 

"Celebrating Women" is hosted by MGH Center for Community Health Improvement, the MGH Health Centers in Charlestown, Chelsea, Everett, and Revere, and the North End Waterfront Health Center.  The event is free and open to the public - please join us and bring a friend!
