A water main break in East Boston caused the street to buckle, forming a large sinkhole underneath one car parked in the area Monday night, fire officials say.

Residents near 168 Cottage Street were evacuated. One home sustained significant water damage to its basement, reports from the scene indicate.

A Honda parked off to the side of the street was lifted and nearly swallowed up as the ground buckled below.
