Mayor Walsh: Boston 'No Longer Pursuing' 2024 Olympics

Boston 2024’s efforts to host the Summer Olympics sustained a major hit Monday morning as Mayor Marty Walsh made it known that he would not sign any document that forces tax payers to spend money on financial overtures generated by the games.

That document is the host city contract that has to be signed by government leaders before any city can be chosen as host.

Walsh said at press conference that he refused to sign paperwork “that puts one dollar of taxpayers money on the line for one penny of overruns on the Olympics.”

The United States Olympic Committee is looking for key city leaders to endorse the 2024 bid, but Walsh’s decision is expected to be backed by Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker.

Walsh’s decision comes as a surprise of sorts, considering he was once supportive of landing the Olympics in Boston for 2024.

“If committing to signing the guarantee today is what’s required to move forward, then Boston is no longer pursuing the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic games,” he said.
