MBTA Cuts: How They Impact Charlestown

Ferry service likely cut, town could lose some bus service.

The MBTA has announced that it will have to make cuts in the near future, and Charlestown will feel some of the pain.

While preliminary reports suggest that Orange Line service will be left intact, some bus routes servicing the town could be eliminated, as could the weekday commuter boat service to the Charlestown Navy Yard.

The transit authority has put forward two plans. Here is how each would impact Charlestown.

Scenario 1*

  • Overall fare increase of 43 percent
  • Adult local bus fare increases from $1.25 to $1.75
  • Adult subway fare increases from $1.70 to $2.40
  • All ferry service would be eliminated

Scenario 2*

  • Overall fare increase of 35 percent
  • Adult local bus fare increases from $1.25 to $1.50
  • Adult subway fare increases from $1.70 to $2.25
  • All ferry service would be eliminated
  • The following bus lines servicing Charlestown would be eliminated: 90, 92, 95 and 105.

Before any of these changes take effect, the MBTA will hold a total of 20 public meetings where riders can voice their opinions. None of those meetings will be held in Charlestown, but .
