Meeting with Gang Members and Walk with Anti-Violence Workers in Roxbury

Today I joined workers from StreetSafe Boston for a walk through streets in Roxbury that have borne a disproportionate share of gang-related crime and violence, after meeting with gang members to speak directly with them about what we can do to reduce violence in Boston’s neighborhoods.

I met with young people today who have gotten caught up with gangs, and their message to me was clear: They want to get out. They want a good education and they want good jobs.

When it comes to addressing youth violence, I believe we have to start by listening. I don’t have all the answers, but as mayor, I will never stop listening to young people who know firsthand what it’s like to face a lack of opportunity and feel unsafe at home.
