Ashley Hansbury Tears It Up at Curry

Senior attack Ashley Hansbury is a standout lacrosse player for the Curry College Colonels.

Ashley Hansbury, a senior attack on the lacrosse team at Curry College, is starting out her last season right. Just this year, she leads in the TCCC (The Commonwealth Coast Conference) for goals scored (52), assists (25), points per game (8.56), and shots per game (11.11). Hansbury’s stats are also top on the NCAA lists. Currently, she leads in goals per game among all D-III athletes.

After her graduation this spring, Hansbury will be off to Germany, to play on the US international team for the summer. Before that next step in her career, however, she plans to make this spring count.

Hansbury is nationally ranked for her impressive statistics on the field. Although she doesn’t have any national records just yet, the Chelmsford High graduate is right on track for an NCAA record in career points.

“The current record is 440. I only need to score 16 more points and have seven games left,” said Hansbury.

After transferring to Curry as an academic sophomore, Hansbury has been honored with a several prestigious titles. She was named women’s lacrosse rookie of the year, and was named TCCC player of the year for her sophomore and junior seasons. In addition, Hansbury was named to the first team All New England last year as a junior.

Hansbury didn’t start playing the sport until about six years ago, when girls lacrosse was introduced as a sport at Chelmsford High.

“I fell in love with lacrosse the first day I pick up a stick my junior year of high school,” said Hansbury.

“Coach Devaney (the head field hockey coach at CHS) talked me into playing,” she said. “It was a sport I became good at very quickly, and I am so thankful the school made the choice to add a girl’s lacrosse team.”

In her last season at Curry, Hansbury has high hopes for her team. She said that she would love to win a championship title this year.

“I have played sports my whole life but I’ve never been on a winning team (at nationals).” The Colonels currently have a 10 – 1 record, one that is consistent with a championship title goal.

Hansbury attributes her success in athletics to her dad’s enthusiasm for sports.

“I’m the player I am today because of my dad. He was a great athlete and he passed it down to his kids. He pushed me enough to make me see how good I really could be. He is my number one fan and is at every game rain or shine, near or far,” she said.
