Back to school...back into shape

Getting back into the fitness groove

Dear Fitness Coach,

The kids went back to school last week and I have a lot more ‘me’ time. Between family BBq’s, beach picnics and summer parties (my husband makes an amazing sangria!), I must have gained at least 10 pounds. I know I got to get back to the gym and start eating heathier, but I am finding it hard to get started.

Dear Unmotivated,

Getting back on track is challenging, but it does get harder the longer you wait. Follow these tips and you will be back to your pre summer weight before Thanksgiving!

1. If you already have a gym membership, you are already halfway there. Check out the fall group exercise schedule at your gym: going to a scheduled class can be motivating. You should aim to attend at least three classes a week. Boot camp style classes are the best as they combine both strength and cardio training.

2. Fall is a great time to spend time outdoors doing any kind of physical activity. Get together with friends or neighbors for a cycle, brisk walk or jog.

3. During the school day (you do not want your kids at home when you do this!) clean out the food cupboards of all the junk food. Replace with fruit and vegetables, whole grain bread and pasta, healthy fats and proteins. There will be some résistance from your family at first, to be sure, but if they see you changing your eating habits they will be inspired to follow suit.

4. Try to eliminate alchohol from your diet altogether, if you can. If you cannot then limit yourself to a once a week treat. There is no doubt that regular consumption will sabotage the best intentions.

5. Drink lots of water-8 to 10 glasses a day. It will help with everything from decreased hunger to increased energy levels
