Ax-Wielding I-495 Carjacker Faces 15 Charges: Police

CHELMSFORD, MA — A Lawrence man who crashed in Chelmsford Wednesday on Interstate 495, used an ax to carjack another vehicle, crashed three more times and was finally tased and arrested by police faces 15 charges. Marcos Garcia, 42, was charged with kidnapping and resisting arrest, among other charges.

Police said the incident started at about 7:30 p.m. on the southbound side of I-495 in Chelmsford when Garcia crashed into a guardrail and then a tractor-trailer.

"Following that crash ... GARCIA ... who was shirtless, covered in blood, and holding a pick axe, approached an unidentified elderly couple who had stopped to assist at the scene and attempted to steal their vehicle," Massachusetts State Police said in a statement. "The elderly man was able to remove GARCIA from their vehicle, and the couple left the area.

"GARCIA then approached an unoccupied Mazda hatchback, pick axe still in hand, and attempted to gain entry, but was unsuccessful as the vehicle was locked. The operator of that vehicle, who was nearby and had also stopped to assist at the crash scene, moved further away from his vehicle, as he feared for his safety It was later determined that a window in that vehicle had been shattered.

"GARCIA then hopped into a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox which was parked at the crash scene, while the owner of that vehicle, a 28-year-old Clinton woman who was outside her vehicle at the time and had also stopped to assist, looked on in fear. GARCIA fled from the crash scene in that stolen vehicle, striking a tow truck on scene in the process."

Police said Garcia crashed into at least three vehicles in Chelmsford before stopping in Littleton, where officers met him. Garcia then trie to steal a Toyota Sienna with two children inside, police said. An officer tased Garcia and he was taken into custody, police said.

Garcia was charged with:

• Two counts of carjacking
• Two counts of a kidnapping a child
• Two counts of carjacking whole armed
• Four count of leaving the scene of a crash
• Two counts of negligent driving
• Resisting arrest
• Larceny
• Wanton destruction
